MEGAN'S DIY TUFFBLOCK PROJECT
We are so excited to share Megan’s floating deck!
Built in May 2021, we are in absolute awe of Megan’s work on her picture frame floating deck.
Megan’s work is so clean that we couldn’t resist running through her TuffBlock experience.
What inspired you to build a floating deck?
We dreamed of having an outdoor space in our backyard since purchasing our home but wanted it to be different. We debated on having a stamped concrete patio but didn't like the idea of reinforcing the concrete to the foundation of our home. So we decided to build a floating deck because that would not require the deck to be reinforced to our home, and we could build the deck by ourselves.
Have you built a structure like this before? If not - how did you find it?
No, we have not built a structure like this before. We have built a shed plus many other wood projects, so we figured the concept would be similar. But that doesn't mean that I didn't do my research. I spent many hours watching YouTube videos, reading articles, and reading through instructions on installing TuffBlocks and decking boards.
What made you choose TuffBlocks for the job?
When I first started my research, I was planning on using concrete blocks, but then I watched a Youtube video that used TuffBlocks, and I was sold. I loved how easy they looked to install, the size of the blocks, that the blocks already had the proper ventilation, and TuffBlocks are lightweight. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about possibly chiseling away concrete to make the pressure-treated lumber fit within the groove.
What would you say were the pros of using TuffBlocks?
The biggest pro to using TuffBlocks is the ease of installing. Other pros I found were that you don't have to carry a heavy concrete block, you don't have to worry about chiseling the block to make the board fit, and you don't have to worry about proper ventilation.
Did you come across any challenges when using the TuffBlocks?
I didn't have any challenges using TuffBlocks. The most challenging part of the build was working with all the angles of my deck.
What resources did you use to help you develop a better understanding of how to use TuffBlocks?
I used the BuildTuff installation guide, and I found the FAQ on the BuildTuff website to be very helpful.
What other material did you use for your floating deck build?
I used 2"x6" ground contact pressure-treated lumber in various lengths. In addition to the lumber, I used joist hangers with appropriate screws and 3" exterior screws to secure the deck's framing together. After the framing was built, I used joist tape to protect the lumber. After, I installed Trex composite decking with hidden fasteners.
Do you think you’ll use TuffBlocks for any future projects?
If I build another floating deck or shed, yes, I will be using TuffBlocks again.
Would you recommend TuffBlocks to your family, friends, and colleagues? If yes, why?
Yes, I would recommend TuffBlocks to anyone looking at building a floating deck or building a shed. The reason why I would recommend the product is because of how easy it is to use.
